#1 Breathing

The most important and easiest way to reduce stress quickly is by controlling your breathing. This might seem like a silly idea, but deep breaths are the body’s way of “resetting” itself.

You can begin by taking several deep breathes. Inhale slowly through your nose until your lungs are full of fresh oxygen. Then, exhale in a steady breath. Repeating this exercise several times during a stressful situation can actually slow your heart rate and calm your body. When your mind is racing, deep breaths can change your focus enough to allow you to relax and rethink your situation.

#2 Talking

Communication is another quick stress-relief exercise. You can share your stresses and worries with your friends and family. A hug or a pat on the back can be a great way to make you feel less anxious. Knowing that other people share your anxiety is often a relief in itself. Talking about the things that cause your anxiety or stress will often make those situations seem less dire.

Good advice from a trusted friend is sometimes all the stress-relief a person requires. Expressing your feelings, including anger or resentment, can allow you to release those emotions. The process of communication can also help to create bonds between yourself and a friend.

#3 Say No!

Saying “no” is another great stress-relieving technique. Taking on too many projects or making yourself available beyond what you can handle is a large cause of daily stress. If you are not able to complete a project, try not to begin that project.

If you are planning a large event, delegate some of the jobs to other people. Sharing the workload can keep your stress to a minimum. Say “no” and your stress levels will immediately decrease. You don’t have to be a martyr and try to do it all.

#4 Exercise

Exercise is also a wonderful stress-reliever. When you feel the anxiety building in your system, take a quick walk. You could try walking during your lunch hour or even join a gym to get some quality exercise time.

The time spent working your body helps to return your mental focus to its best level. Since the body and the mind are connected, relaxing your body will help to relax you mentally.

Exercise is a great way to reduce stressful effects on your body. Exercise can lower blood pressure and reduce the hormones in your body that respond to stress.

Thank you for this! I like the simplicity of it, it’s not “you have to do these 16 things in order, etc, etc”. That would just make me more stressed, lol. Exercise is a great stress reliever (I’m a personal trainer, so I should know!) and it’s something anyone can do, even if it’s a simple walk down the street or around your own back yard.

Saying no is the hardest thing I find. It leaves me feeling really, really guilty. I need to learn that it’s okay not to do things you don’t want to do to please others. And you’re so right about breathing. When I feel stressed, I breathe right out until I feel I’m collapsing and then let the air come back in naturally. It always helps. Thanks for this. x

  3. These are fantastic tips. Especially, say no! Some additional favorites are: do yoga, take a bath, and aromatherapy.

    Hi Shannah,
I think the hardest tip for me to follow is #3. I have such a hard time saying no and I know that causes me unnecessary stress. Your tips are very helpful!

I’m pretty good with 1 – 3, but I need to be more consistent with #4. Good reminders! Thanks!

  7. Yes to all these!! The best I’ve found for me is #1 – when I feel myself getting amped up, just forcing myself to breathe deep, slow breaths instantly calms me down and, like you said, it’s like a reset. Ugh, if only I could get that #4 down…. hahaha

  8. Nissrine says:

This is great. Breathing is one of the things I recommend most to my clients who are stressed and have stressful day jobs bc it’s so easy to do right at your desk even without anyone even noticing you’re taking a break if it’s that big of an issue to do so.

  9. Tessa says:

These are such helpful ways to reduce stress! I am someone who does ALL of these weekly to reduce my stress. I actually do my workouts with my sister so we can talk out whatever is going on. It offers double the benefits!
