What is a Good Way to Flavor Water?

For years all I can remember hearing is that drinking 8 glasses of water a day was what was suggested. Now experts are saying to drink half your body weight in ounces per day plus additional water if you are out in the heat or exercising. That can be quite a bit more to some people (especially me). I have heard from so many people that it is a huge struggle to get that much water in every day.

Drinking water is not the only way to get our body what it needs to stay hydrated and function properly. Many fruits and vegetables like cantaloupe, grapefruit, strawberries, watermelon, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, radish, zucchini all contain over 90% water. Others such as carrots, raspberries, pineapples, peaches, grapes, apples still contain over 80%. By adding more fruits and veggies to your everyday diet will help provide your body with some of its daily water needs.

I did for a number of years drink my water plain with ice. After reading some benefits of having lemon water first thing in the morning I started squeezing lemons into my water and that is how I drink my water now all day everyday. I just cut up a lemon each morning and throughout the day squeeze it into my new glass of water.  Here is the lemon squeezer I use from Amazon: Lemon Squezer. You can even freeze fresh lemon or lime juice in an ice tray and just put the cubes in your water all week.

I have personally not liked artificial water enhancers like Mio or Propel, but my kids did and they were using them until I found out about the nasty ingredients that were hiding in those little drops. Here is a great blog post on the Best & the Worst Water Enhancers you can buy on the market today.

Another trendy option to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your daily routine are fruit-infuser jars or water bottles. Here are some fresh fruit and vegetable ideas for enhancing your water to make it tastier, but also naturally flavored.

Here are a few of my own favorites.

Grape-Orange

My husband and kids enjoy this one the best at our house. Put 2 cups of grapes (sliced in half) and a thinly sliced orange with rind into a gallon of water. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor.

Cherry Limeade

I used to down a Sonic Cherry Limeade every other day, now I try to stay away form all that sugar. Put two cups of fresh cherries (cut in half) and one thinly sliced fresh lime into a gallon of water.  Mix gently and store in fridge until ready to drink.
